Pastor Joel R. Chipman was born in 1959 in Flint, Michigan, where he spent most of his life. In 1975, after responding to the call of God, he began his ministry at South Flint Tabernacle under the powerful leadership and training of Rev. Nathaniel J. Wilson, Ed.D. He received his local ministerial license with The United Pentecostal Church International (UPCI) in May of 1979. On November 17, 1979, Pastor Chipman and his wife, Jennifer, were married. Together, they continued their ministry under the leadership of Rev. Robert E. Henson, newly elected pastor of South Flint Tabernacle in the fall of 1979.
In 1980, Pastor Chipman was hired as a full time Associate Pastor and was responsible for overseeing the Outreach and Promotions ministries at South Flint Tabernacle. Under his direction, the church enjoyed the implementation of several new areas of outreach that experienced significant growth. In addition, he was the editor of the South Flint Scroll, the official publication of South Flint Tabernacle. His ministry also included serving as an instructor for the Bible College (Apostolic Training Institute) and assisting with the Christian School (Tabernacle Christian Academy). He was involved in the Bible quizzing program of the UPCI in Michigan for over 20 years, officiating as the Quiz Master for Michigan from 1984-1990.
In 1986, Pastor Chipman received his General License with the UPCI. Shortly thereafter, in 1987, he assumed the leadership of the Youth Department of South Flint Tabernacle, directing the youth into a time of tremendous revival, both numerically and spiritually. Pastors, missionaries, ministers, and lay leaders who were originally a part of the youth group under his direction are currently involved in the work of God. In the spring of 1988, Pastor Chipman received his ordination, with Rev. Nathaniel Urshan, General Superintendent of the UPCI officiating. Elected as Section II Youth Director for Michigan in 1988, he served faithfully in that position for over five years. He was privileged to speak at both National Youth Congress and National Youth Convention for the UPCI and has ministered in several churches throughout the United States.
In December of 1993, Pastor Chipman became Pastor at Life Tabernacle Apostolic Church of Waterford, Michigan. The Lord has blessed his ministry, and the church has experienced continued revival. Also, as a result of his leadership, the effectiveness of the local assembly has been greatly enhanced by the addition of numerous ministries.
Pastor Chipman’s education includes an Associates degree in Theology from Apostolic Training Institute, a Bachelors degree in Ministry from Newburg Theological Seminary and a Masters of Arts degree in Ministry from Hope International University with special emphasis in Leadership.
The Chipman’s have two sons, Justin and Jared, who are very active at Life Tabernacle in the music, youth and outreach ministries.
